Vallformosa shines bright with two gold, one silver and two bronze medals at the D.O. Penedès wine competition

Vallformosa brilla con dos oros, un plata y dos bronces en el concurso de la DO Penedès

Vallformosa shone bright during the prize-giving ceremony of the 2020 D.O. Penedès Tastavins Competition. The Cultivare Blanc (Gold medal), Cultivare Negre (Bronze medal), Freyé Bio Orgànic (Silver medal), Freyé Rosat (Bronze medal) and Masia La Sala Rosat (Gold medal) have all been awarded prizes by the Penedès Acadèmia Tastavins Association at the 54th edition of their competition.

The CEO of Vallformosa, Marta Vidal, celebrated the victories saying, “we reaffirm our faith in our vine growers, sustainable, organic agriculture and the ongoing improvement of our wines.” Vidal, while stating that “she couldn’t be any happier with the results when taken against the backdrop of the quality of the wines presented”, remains convinced that “the Penedès region has great potential, along with fantastic wine makers and growers.”

Vallformosa was the winery with the most wins at the awards ceremony yesterday, topped off by the gold medals taken home by the iconic Xarel·lo Cultivare 2017 in the category for aged white wines, and the Masia La Sala Rosat 2019 (Merlot, Sumoll and Ull de Llebre). In addition to this, the Freyé Bio Organic 2018, made from Syrah, Garnatxa Negra and Merlot varieties, was awarded a silver medal in the young red wine category. Finally, the legendary Cultivare Sumoll/Samsó 2016 wine (in the aged red wine category) and the Freyé Rosat 2019, made from 85% Syrah and Sumoll, were both awarded Bronze medals.

The D.O. Penedès Tastavins Competition is the oldest wine competition in Spain. It has been held annually since 1966 by the Penedès Acadèmia Tastavins Association, with technical support from the Regulatory Council for the Penedès Appelation.

The award ceremony for the winners of the 54th D.O. Penedès Tastavins Competition was held yesterday evening for a strictly reduced number of people due to the current pandemic at the Sala dels Trinitaris in Vilafranca del Penedès. This year’s tasting panel was made up of 23 sommeliers, winemakers, wine training experts and journalists, all of them agreeing to highlight the truly excellent level of quality of this year’s wines. The panel awarded a maximum of five prizes for each of the seven categories (white wines, aged white wines, rosé wines, red wines, aged red wines, Clàssic Penedès, and single-varietal Xarel·lo wines), awarding one Gold medal, one Silver medal and three Bronze medals according to points.
